Ok here goes, a few thoughts I’ve had lately about social media https://twitter.com/lisahopeking/status/1329208023752040449
Too homogenous — I get Fleets concept. I don’t get why we need another Instagram, née Snapchat. What made Twitter unique now diluted in effort to chase engagement. A homogenous kind of engagement where I have to do more work to access lesser quality content.
Low ROI — There’s a mind numbing amount of attention-worthy short, UGC content rn. I don’t have TikTok, I just watch what people re-post. I’m impressed that so many people are so creative. I wonder if they wonder if their effort is worth the payoff. And what is that payoff?
Hypnosis, but not in a good way — Addiction to feeds is not a new concern. But something about content that loops automatically makes me very nervous to think how more exposure to repetition (ie watching the same TikTok over and over) rewires our brain and senses.
We’ve become cannibals — Like I said, I don’t have TikTok, never have. But I went diving for research last night- 1.5 hour on Instagram Reels, basically the same & also largely TT reshares. When my phone finally died, I felt released from a trance, and I felt like a cannibal.
