I know the headline focuses on the money, but I want to highlight some other things:

@UMich apologized and acknowledged they failed:
"The sexual misconduct of the former university provost that has been detailed in a report from the WilmerHale law firm is abhorrent and unacceptable,” U-M spokesman Rick Fitzgerald said. “The University of Michigan failed on many levels. . ."
“We recognize how difficult it was for these eight women to come forward to share their experiences. We thank them for their courage and we apologize to each one of them and to all survivors.”

#UMCourage
Owning their role + an apology are both great first steps to making @Umich the #LeadersandBest but it is just that a first step. We must all, like the survivors, continue to make the University better.
I fear the heavy lifting of the survivors will be lost in the headlines. They reported, they worked with the investigators, and they have worked and are still working to improve internal processes and policies @Umich.

How can we show up for the survivors?

Here are 3 ideas.
(2) If you are connected to @Umich ask within your sphere of influence how the folks around you are working to respond to the findings in the WilmerHale investigation.

This is not just a Martin Philbert problem or a single school's problem. This is on all of us.
(3) If you aren't connected to @Umich but you just love this place. Hold us accountable. Make sure we don't stop until we finish the work these survivors started.

We can do better and be better, let us all walk down the path the survivors put us on.

#UMCourage
Finally, I hope the survivors felt seen and heard in this process.

I hope they are one step closer to finding healing after their experiences.

I hope they can feel our gratitude and appreciation.
