The theatrical experience is going to change post-Covid. Content will flourish, but with studios/corporations investing primarily in streaming, you can expect that platform to take the lead over theaters for the foreseeable future. Theaters will have to find their footing again.
That doesn’t mean theaters won’t return to the golden days (i.e. pre-Covid), but it will take some time to do that and how it’s done and with which films will be telling. Like many things in our lives right now, it’s wait-and-see. It’s impossible to predict.
You also can’t blame studios for trying to find the best venue to screen their product. Holding onto it in the hopes that theatrical will just magically bounce back to the way it was is a damn risky gamble, especially with new films being made. They’ve got to keep it moving.
And, figuring out the best way to get their product to viewers is tricky. When the world is holed up at home, the only way directly to them is via streaming and giving them something new to watch is a show of good faith.
