Caught up with Berserk. Bit of a shaky beginning for me, but overall there was lots to love about it especially during FOTME and Fantasia. Guts is a fantastic MC and the weight he carries is genuinely captivating and heart breaking.
My biggest issue with Berserk was a lot of the concepts were good, but the execution early on was a bit of a turn off for me. In BS and GA there was a lot of spectacle that fell flat for me and either didn't improve the story much or didn't give much of a lasting impression.
Another thing that bothered me was the way Casca was handled. Ridiculing her for being a female solider and being the target of rape got old fast. Her dynamics have been beneficial for the cast, but her character is okay. Although these recent chapters have started to change that
Lastly some of the minor antagonists just aren't very interesting. Characters like Bone beard, Mozgus, and Adon were lackluster and didn't catch my attention at all. Granted that wasn't really their intention. More just my preference than anything else really.
Enough negatives. My favorite thing is the dynamics. Every major character dynamic was at minimum good in it's own way. From Casca-Guts-Griffith to even some less liked characters like Isidro and Puck (he goat tho). Genuinely great writing with some awesome payoff in later arcs.
The development later on for characters such as Guts, Schierke, and Farnese has been sublime. As well as peeling back the layers of characters such as Skull knight and Griffith. Something I enjoyed immensely in the later arcs.
Next was the magic of the world. Such a cool and fleshed out system. Not too many series take the time to develop so many layers to magic system and then implement in a way that feels natural yet incredibly intriguing and mysterious at the same time.
Overall, it stumbled in the beginning, but I fell in love with FOTME and Fantasia. They're now some of my favorite Seinen arcs and I'm now hooked to slowly wait with the rest of the fans for the rest of the series. Really think my love for the series can only grow from here.
I know it seemed like a pretty negative review for a 9, but for a pretty universally acclaimed series I thought it was important to explain the things I didn't like since it normally gets so much praise.
