In many cases Disney gets crapped on by people who want their media crafted in an artisanal fashion, and for whom the word "corporation" is intrinsically evil.
In this case, Disney deserves the crapping upon. 1/

IANAL, but I'm pretty sure a company cannot buy the rights to something under contract (e.g., a novel) but not the obligations under contract (e.g., royalties). If so, it's a horrifying precedent ... and would burn Disney in the ass, too. 2/ #disneymustpay
This is made worse in this particular instance by it being Alan Dean Foster, of whom I have many fond memories of Star Wars (and Star Trek) books in my youth. But at any level, Disney's position here is ... well, pretty awful. 3/3 #disneymustpay
Added news on the subject. Yup, that's really what Disney is arguing. And, apparently, some other Big Media (e.g., NBC/Universal) have been poking around at the same concept, too.

And a good thread here from Cory Doctorow, explaining / exploring the topic. https://twitter.com/doctorow/status/1329240243866791936
