Have you noticed that the CPC and, to some extent lately, the NDP, are very fond of presenting things in a very simplistic way? A way that is actually impossible or ill-advised in the real world? 1/12 https://twitter.com/NikaDragomira/status/1327299917761683456
"Why didn't the PM close the border in January?" "Why doesn't Canada have rapid testing like they do in the US?" "Why hasn't the government pushed through universal pharmacare?" "Why hasn't the PM done a better job of managing COVID?" And other such twaddle... 2/12
These are simplistic questions. They assume the electorate is ignorant of how Canada works. Unfortunately, many people are. They like these questions. They like how angry they feel when they hear them. But the questions themselves are misleading and asking them is deceitful. 3/12
In January, almost no one had heard of COVID. Yes, the government had been advised, but there was no immediate reason to think it would come here. Had the PM suddenly closed the border in January, there would have been a terrible public outcry. 4/12
The CPC would've screamed about dictatorship & Canada turning into North Korea. There were a lot of Canadians abroad who needed an opportunity to come home. There were (still are) essential workers who live on 1 side of the border & work on the other side. It's complicated. 5/12
Something as drastic as closing borders can be done unilaterally, but it is far better for international relations if other countries are given a heads up in advance, and negotiations are carried out to enable trade relations to continue. 6/12
Closing the borders of a country is not like swinging your back gate shut and putting a padlock on it. But the opposition parties would like people to think it is. 7/12
The rapid testing units available in the US have been shown to be inaccurate. Simply yelling that we should have them, as though our government is doing Canadians wrong by not getting them, overlooks this key fact. 8/12
We do not need a bunch of infected people walking around, thinking they are A-OK because an unreliable test gave them a false negative result. It is disingenuous to keep asking this question, and the opposition parties know this. 9/12
But they are willing to say anything to cast shade on the government. Which suggests they are willing to mislead, possibly even cause harm through the deceit, in order to achieve their goals. Not anyone I would trust to run a country... 10/12
Why hasn't the PM sorted out school safety/health care responses/contact tracing/etc? Because all those things are provincial jurisdiction. The opposition parties should know this. If they do not, they lack the education to govern. 11/12
The federal government can only do so much, after that it is the responsibility of the premiers. And certain premiers are stubbornly refusing to act, or even use funds given by the federal government to improve the situation. #cdnmedia also know all this and are complicit. 12/12
