I asked Dr Peter Juni, Director of the Applied Health Research Centre at St. Michael's in Toronto what he made of that.

"From a societal perspective it's important to keep schools open, but we should not pretend that we know that children do not play a role... if this is at all being suggested that we're sure that children do not play a role, this statement is problematic."
He says some early studies on the topic were biased because far fewer children were being exposed to COVID, and because they're less likely to be symptomatic there were also far fewer children being tested.
He also says while there is some evidence younger children are less likely to get infected...

"What is relatively clear is that the role of children above the age of twelve is comparable to adults."
