5. Captain Loyd Patch, Commanding Officer HQ Co, 1st Battalion, 506th PIR.

Dick Winter's DSC medal.
The citation for his award stated it was for gallantry during the Brecourt Manor Assault, June 6, 1944 (D-Day). Winters and soldiers from Easy Co & 2nd Battalion were ordered to take out 4 large German 105 Cannons that were firing on Utah Beach
4/
Winters and his men silenced 3 of the 4 guns, the last being taken by D Company. Troops landing at Utah Beach had a relatively easy landing compared to the other beaches, due in part to this successful assault.
5/
Colonel Sink had actually recommended Winters for the Medal of Honor, but the award was downgraded to the DSC due to the policy of only one Medal of Honor awarded per division, which was awarded to Lt. Col. Robert Cole.
