In the data just given to me by the MN Health Department, the COVID-19 spread associated with restaurants/bars has accelerated of late.
Thursday 139 establishments were associated with outbreaks, and 2766 cases.
By yesterday, it was up to 190 establishments and 3201 cases.
Gov. Walz will no doubt cite the rapid increase in numbers as a reason for the four-week closing of restaurants and bars.
When it comes to gyms - the numbers they gave me look like this:
Nov 5: 712 cases
Nov 12: 747 cases
Nov 16: 747 cases
Salons (which are not going to be closed today by Gov. Walz)
Nov 5: 40 cases
Nov 12: 41 cases
Nov 17: 41 cases
The sports activities numbers from MDH say they have had 192 outbreaks but 51 are new this week. Again, there is the rapid growth Walz has mentioned. Total cases affiliated with sports are at 6375 with 985 of them new this week.
MDH notes that 12,937 household contacts were recommended to quarantine based on COVID-19 cases stemming from youth sports. The domino effect. And they believe those numbers grossly underestimate the overall number of teammates, opposing teams and coaches who also have contact.
