Okay, one more best books thread for the year - this time new(ish), non-Australian books, starting with two glorious collections of nature writing. MacDonald and Jamie are wonderful on nature and - especially - humanity
I watched Jia Tolentino interview Zadie Smith at Broadside a year ago and was blown away - their respective recent books only deepened my admiration for their intellect and insight.
I read Milkman and Say Nothing back-to-back and, while the're utterly different books, both captured the claustrophobia and fear of The Troubles incredibly powerfully.
I had ridiculous expectations for these two books, and they both delivered - Offill and Smith both wrote utterly contemporary books filled with the angst and dread of the 21st Century, but somehow shot through with humour and (especially Smith) a sense of real optimism
A quartet of talked about novels that lived up to their hype for me - I'd be thrilled if Real Life won the Booker tomorrow
I read these two books on a lazy week in the country between the fires and the pandemic - Nothing to See Here is my go-to answer now when someone asks for a 'funny' book (although it's so much more), while the Machado is wildly inventive, painful and revelatory memoir.
