I know I shouldn’t be surprised but the push back against PM’s green plans are just staggeringly lacking in any sort of intellectual heft or coherence. No alternative plan, no realistic engagement with the problem at hand, just ‘it’ll cost too much’ whining and tribal posturing.
It’s still immensely dangerous. Easily the biggest threat to the net zero transition. Far bigger than the technical and economic challenges. But there’s just so little there. A barely concealed belief the climate isn’t changing and a faux concern at the cost of change.
All wrapped in this bizarre insistence they’ve discovered something revelatory when pointing out challenges of technology and equity that people are working pretty much around the clock to resolve.
All these people suddenly concerned about energy costs (which are unlikely to rise significantly) or rural travel links (which can be maintained) who have literally never once raised the issue of cold and draughty homes or closed bus services.
All these people complaining about democracy and ‘never voting for this’ who apparently can’t read a manifesto.
Sure, disagree with the plan. But try and do it with a critique and alternative plan that doesn’t start and end with ‘climate change isn’t really a problem’. Because regardless of what you learnt from Trump it’s handy to anchor an argument in some sort of reality.
