Just curious. What does everyone think of #DCDeathMetal? No one is talking about it. Remarkably few are even reviewing it. What do you think? Please respond to survey and comment.
I would prefer it was a story disconnected to the DCU entirely. It is bombastic and crazy but it lacks the necessary grounding as a founding narrative for DC moving forward. Plus, very bad optics. It's the end of an era for DC in a series ironically called "Death Metal".
Death Metal lacks a coherent story and is in no way character driven, unless you are a Batman Who Laughs fan, (who is the only character that could be said to drive the story, beyond the plot itself). Also, without the tie-ins, the main series proper - makes even less sense.
But I acknowledge that the story is obviously not written to make much sense. There are multiple 'Gary Sues' from Robin King to BWL and Deux ex machina plot twists that happen every issue and in every tie-in. It's devoid of plot linearity (i.e plot A + B never results in C. )
Consequently, it really is pointless to try to constructively review it. It is like trying to rate the quality of a light bulb. It's all flash, but it illuminates little besides the next potential DC direct action figure... which won't happen anyway because DC Direct is no more.
I must also acknowledge my own mood in the current world cultural climate. I am biased against such relentlessly depressing narratives that never seem to end. Why is the story of the BWL's not over by now? To be clear...
To be clear, if the story is supposed to be about the DC Multiverse/Omniverse, how is focussing every single plot point on the Batman Who Laughs paying any kind of respect to the richness of DC history? The heroes in the story "fail up" rather than succeed.Relentlessly depressing.
Take for example the latest issue of Death Metal #5: It has Lex Luthor schooling WW on truth and suddenly talking about having to build a "Truth Machine" at the forge of worlds. Such a revelation could not have been deciphered based on 2 years worth of issues leading to this.
So many cool concepts from the 7 different forces - to Perpetua -to the source wall -to the Judges of creation - to the Quintessence -with no logical progression to Luthor suddenly wanting to build a "Truth Machine" -that we are to believe will let the heroes peer into reality.
All Snyder's talk of the importance of WW in Death Metal and she is nothing but a failure and embarrassment. The embodiment of truth needs Luthor to tell her about a Truth Machine. I'm sorry, but this series is not enhancing DC lore; its outright ignoring it in favor of despair.
There is actually a scene where Diana thanks Lex Luthor for enlightening her--- which pretty much symbolizes the lack of hope that this series projects. Little insight comes from the heroes. It usually comes from the villains. Even when heroes win, they lose.
A particularly disappointing tie-in was Death Metal: Rise of a New God. It pretty much confirms what a complete waste of time this series is. We have a Chronicler who is impressed with the "discovery" that our multiverse will always endure regardless of good or bad events. WTF?
If we take the logic as put forward in "Rise of a New God" to task, it becomes clear that if no outcome of any event actually matters--then WTF is the point of anything. Apparently, DC thinks that "Everything matters because Nothing matters". Is this their idea of "Hope"? 🙄
Also, from a long term marketing perspective, is the only "family" in the DCU the Batman Family? What about Superman, WW, Flash, Green Lantern, the Hawks, Aquaman, and B-list hero families? Where is the variety of amazing DCU heroes beyond "Bat"-whatever.
DC needs to stop ignoring it's vast roster of characters. Marvel is making them look stupid. @robertliefeld made a good point in his podcast that C-list Marvel characters are more well known than some DC "A-listers". But I digress. somewhat. Bah.
It is hard to exaggerate just how bad a shape the current DCU is in right now. Other than Batman and "any DC series written by Tom-Taylor"- DC has lost its way. Aside from cancellations, the most powerful piece of evidence of this - is the convoluted narrative of #DCDeathMetal.
But I get it. Batman sells and AT&T does not care about developing the DCU; rather, only Batman and the 'established' characters. I challenge AT&T to prove this assumption wrong. I also won't hold my breath.
