Something I noticed while on planes: when it comes to golf courses, landscape context matters. GC's are often connected to urban/suburban landscapes. This is why they have ecological value: they preserve green space amongst development.
More importantly, they are not homogenous: there is a mix of turf, forested areas, grasslands, gardens, scrub areas, water bodies, buildings, etc. This heterogeneity increases the ability of these properties to preserve biodiversity & provide ecosystem services in developed areas
We are learning a lot about the role of golf courses in urban ecology. As the industry continues to innovate & advance its own environmental efforts, we can use their example to design more functional urban green spaces & improve land mgmt
