The Harassment, Harmful Communications and Related Offences Bill was first put forward to the Dáil in 2017. It will have been at committee stage for a year this December. The government is quite clearly in no rush. This is unacceptable.
Dara Quigley took her own life in 2017 after a Garda shared intimate footage of her. Three years later and Irish victims still don’t have legal protection. https://www.google.ie/amp/s/amp.independent.ie/irish-news/garda-who-filmed-tragic-journalist-dara-quigley-to-avoid-prosecution-37184945.html
How many more people need to die before the government take this seriously? We are years behind many other developed countries because of the shame and stigma still attached to sex, and a government with a track record of not taking (predominantly) women’s issues seriously.
In England the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015 was introduced in 2014 and signed into law in 2015. In Canada the Protecting Canadians from Online Crime Act was introduced in 2013 and became law in 2014. Why are we still waiting?
It is quite clear that this Government simply have no haste with regards to this matter. They just do not care enough. It is repugnant that Irish women have DIED and not even that is enough to put a bit of fire under their boots.
In 2019 Leo Varadkar said the Bill should be through by the summer recess of that year. Why isn’t it done a year and a half later? Source: https://www.google.ie/amp/s/www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-30921374.html%3ftype=amp
