As DW said, drivers back then didn't like teammates and didn't want to share info at all. That certainly contributed to Bobby's desire to leave...
But the reason that car even came into existence was Bobby's hesitancy to try new setups. Crew chief Gary Nelson had ideas he knew would work to beat Bill Elliott and the 9 but Bobby wouldn't try them...
When Gary's setups were used and won the race in dominant fashion that sealed the deal. Bobby was angry and left. Miller followed and we were without a sponsor.
But the idea of running a dedicated R&D car to test setups was successful and way before its time. In fact, there were plans to build a dedicated test track on our property in Charlotte.
