When utilities consider the costs of climate change and the amount of spending on grid hardening and other issues to mitigate worsening extreme weather events, how expensive do they figure this will all be? https://www.utilitydive.com/news/climate-risks-accelerating-heres-what-costs-duke-pge-and-16-other-utilities-expect/588860/
@UtilityDive launched a new interactive list to sort through 18 utilities as they identify the physical risks of #climatechange through their latest @CDP filings. Forecasting cost of floods, wildfires and storms as these events happen w greater and greater frequency is.. complex.
Despite this, there's a lot to glean from how utilities try to estimate these costs through these voluntary filings. My 'fav' finding is the instance where U.S. utilities assume 'doing nothing and paying for the damage' is just slightly cheaper than mitigating the climate risks
Thanks to the @UtilityDive team on all the work with this project -- @kavya_balaraman @ggonzalez2176 @cmorehouse10 @TeamWetDog @LarryPearlDC -- for scouring CDP fillings with me and prioritizing this project. AND THANK YOU to @Namisumida for making our ideas interactive & sharp!
This is part of an awesome collaboration that we kicked off this year on the financial implications of climate change in different industries.
