Hello! I’m @elenavardon and will be taking over PressPad’s Twitter feed this evening to bring you the highlights of @EditorsUK’s Diversity in the News Media event which starts in less than 5min! 🗞️
We'll be hearing from ✨ @pollycurtis, @Leon_Mann, Vic Motune, @TheVoiceNews, @ShingiMararike and @EleanorMills✨
@ShingiMararike highlights the importance of building relationships with mentors early on and of being persistent even if it is daunting, especially when it can feel like you're carrying the responsibility of your peers outside of journalism into the workplace every day
@Leon_Mann founded the Black Collective of Media in Sport @bcomstweet - when it comes to diversity, he says it's important to follow the money and the decision-makers at the highest level.

"We're relying on a group of people who lack diversity, understanding"
@EleanorMills says that newspapers will die if we don't focus more urgently on younger & more diverse audiences

Diversity efforts are going too slowly, as @WIJ_UK's research showed.

"It's a real scandal within our industry that we are still having this conversation now"
For Vic Motune from @TheVoiceNews, diversity hires often translate into a lack of nurturing.

There is an urgent need for news organisations to think beyond the traditional recruiting routes, to widen networks and explore content partnerships.
When asked for advice for young black journalists who want to work newsrooms where they don’t feel represented, @ShingiMararike stresses to not compromise, to stand up and say something if your experience isn't being catered for!
@EleanorMills adds that senior managers should be allies, advocate for young and brilliant talent and use their power and position to bring people from diverse backgrounds in.
The panel gave their thoughts on diversity targets:
- @Leon_Mann says they are needed to monitor progress and enforce urgency
- @ShingiMararike believes the focus should be building a culture through which the targets are met
On how to build a network, @Leon_Mann's advice is to start as soon as you come in

@bcomstweet offers a safe space for sports journalists as well as guidance from people with a familiarity of experience
