I don’t know how we get millions of people to understand that this is what they voted for but we just fucking have to, I have no idea but we do.

And before you barge in to tell me they actually do understand but just don’t care: I 100% believe that you’re wrong about that. https://twitter.com/sentinasmith/status/1328869292117532674
I believe it because of empirical data, not my fucking opinion.
There is a profound disconnect among voters regarding how the people they vote for affects whether or not they get policies that benefit them. Which seems utterly incomprehensible to those of us deep in the weeds, but it’s true.
Which is why the Georgia special elections are going to be so fucking hard. We don’t just have to convince people to turn out, we have to somehow get them to understand why it matters if they want anything good to happen for them.
And going back to my thread a few days ago about the epistemological crisis we’re facing: a lot of people in GA simply don’t live in the same factual universe that the rest of us do and are therefore probably not reachable at all.
Bingo.

Look at ballot initiatives and you get a much clearer picture of what a huge number of people in the country actually want to happen. It just doesn’t square with who they voted for. https://twitter.com/KitGonzo/status/1329121842016161795
It’s really important to understand that drawing any hard conclusions from exit polls at this point is *super* preliminary, but this is just about what initiatives passed and where and by how much.
See also data on how popular increasing taxes on high income brackets is among people who then turn around and vote for candidates who give massive tax cuts to those exact same brackets.

They literally do not understand what they’re doing. And I don’t think they’re stupid.
Some of that is probably just that yeah, they agree with increasing taxes on the very wealthy, but racial resentment matters more to them so they privilege that over tax policy, but I don’t think it explains all of it.
I’ve seen the same analysis, specifically about people who favor masks and also voted for Trump and genuinely believe that he favors masks too.

Again, it seems incomprehensible, and yet here we are. https://twitter.com/angnor_nmw/status/1329123615053287424
I want to fucking throttle these people btw
