Let's talk about how we've been making the same basic demands for our people for 8 months now, yet the governor has allowed COVID-19 to run through our prisons & jails. #FreeThemNowCT https://twitter.com/katalcenter/status/1329109745710497792
Since March we've been asking @GovNedLamont to release some incarcerated people and ensure they have a safe dignified place to land because social distancing is impossible in prison. #FreeThemNowCT
At @CCFJHartford & the Greater Hartford Interfaith Action Alliance (over 38 congregations) we saw four groups as an easy place for @GovNedLamont to release immediately:
youth, people incarcerated on technical parole violations, pre-trial detainees, & those near the end of their sentence anyway. Again this was as early as March.
@katalcenter organized a virtual press conference where even the chair of the CT state judiciary committee, @10SDDem, championed the call for decarceration.
Since then over 2,200 incarcerated people and staff have contracted the coronavirus in Connecticut. There are fewer than 10,000 people incarcerated in our small state.
