Okay gang... here, as promised, is my review of Fallout 76 after the September 2020 major update/upgrade.

It is all, of course, IMO.

Those of you with no interest can, if you wish, filter out the hashtag I will use in this thread.

Short version: Fallout 4, which I have played extensively, is better - more immersive.

76 feels more simplified in some ways, yet more complex in others.

There are no settlements to worry about in 76, for example. In fact, until the update, there were no NPCs at all!

#SDvsFO76
I have developed two characters so far. One is at lvl 44, the other at 51.

I am playing - so far - solo in 76, yet it is a multi-layer game. You CAN play solo, but some bosses and tasks WILL need a team later on.

#SDvsFO76
One of the reasons found 4 to be more immersive is the squillions of mods available for it. I run 250+

76 does not yet officially support mods, although Bethesda say they are coming.

There ARE 76 mods at Nexus, but they have to be installed manually and are a PITA.

#SDvsFO76
The perk system in 76 is fiddly as phuque compared with 4.

BUT, it is more flexible in that perk points can be moved between SPECIAL attributes once you get past lvl 50.

At 50+, Legendary perk cards become available at various stages. These are very powerful.

#SDvsFO76
There is a saying, which I am thinking of getting put on a teeshirt, among some 76 players: Crying in 50 cal(ibre).

This is because ammo is scarce compared with 4. You can craft your own, but that depends on you getting the raw materials. Lead being rare-ish.

#SDvsFO76
More on ammo...

So, when you get to heavy or other automatic weapons, like the 50cal machine gun, ammo becomes a real issue.

This is one reason I am a 50cal hunting rifle equipped sniper - use less ammo.

#SDvsFO76
Which brings me to food and water...

You have to eat and drink to survive. This, especially early game, I found a real PITA, partly because food spoils over time.

There are perk cards that help, but you have to work up through enough levels to get them.

#SDvsFO76
Aside: did I mention that you start the game without a weapon?

You leave the vault with some food, water, vault suit and not much else.

Fortunately, you can get a basic weapon - not the infamous 10mm pistol, very quickly.

#SDvsFO76
Caps are also much scarcer than they were in 4. It's a struggle.

There are robot vendors you can sell to, but they pay you roughly 10% - or less - of the purchase cost from them.

Which brings me to vending machines at your own CAMP site...

#SDvsFO76
You can eventually sell items yourself, via vending machine at you own CAMP. You fix your prices by visiting other player's CAMPs and seeing what they're selling for.

Currently, many of us have disabled our vending machines. This is due to a bug I'll cover later.

#SDvsFO76
VATS has been simplified, and I like this change a lot.

There are several more workbench types added from 4. Your CAMP soon spreads out.

There is no player level cap. I saw a lvl 675 player a couple of days ago!

#SDvsFO76
Power armour is done in an interesting way that I think is better.

You keep a chassis - weighing 10 units - in your inventory. Any armour pieces you have attached to it do not get deducted from your max. carry weight. This is just as well, because...

#SDvsFO76
... OMFD the weight limit problem is much bigger than it was in 4. You are constantly managing it. It is fortunately, there are workbenches scattered around where you can break down your loot into lighter scrap items.

But it is a problem.

Weapons 1.

Weapons themselves have levels. E.g. my L44 character got a L50 50cal MG drop from a kill yesterday. But I won't be able to equip it until I am L50. Make sense?

I like this change.

There are also legendary weapons for super funsies.

#SDvsFO76
Am I boring you yet?

#SDvsFO76
Weapons 2.

Upgrading weapons is done in a way I really like, although the random side of it can be annoying.

When you scrap a weapon, it not only releases its raw materials, it also unlocks a random upgrade e.g. different sights, receiver, stock, barrel etc.

Out of the box, the graphics of 76 are, if you have the hardware, better than an un-modded 4.

I am running a mid spec. laptop:

I7-9750H @ 2.6GHz, 6 cores
16GB RAM
1TB SSD
GTX 1660 Ti graphics

Game visuals mostly set to Ultra, a couple on High.

#SDvsFO76
I play the game on a 27" monitor.

Storage of your raw materials, loot and spare weapons is an issue. You stash chest only holds 800 units by weight.

Unless you sign up for Fallout First, which adds unlimited storage for junk - makes a huge difference. More on that...

#SDvsFO76
I pay GB£11.99/month for Fallout First membership.

This adds unlimited junk storage as a huge bonus.

1,600 ish Atoms (in-game currency)/month.

Survival tent - placed anywhere and freely movable, Lets you access cooking, both storage chests, and a bed.

Extra goodies
