Unfortunately, even mandating more bystander/sexual assault training for organizations will do little to solve the systemic sexual violence perpetrated on campus. As we all know, hazing is rampant despite mandated hazing training. Moodle modules will not solve systemic issues.
Our response to systemic sexual violence needs to be aimed at overthrowing the system, not changing individual hearts and minds. We need to fundamentally change SG so that it represents the students. We need to root out all people involved in the decades-long cover up.
We need to abolish the IFC, which does nothing but perpetrate sexual violence and terrorize our campus. We need swift, severe punishment for people found responsible for sexual violence. We need free and expanded mental health services.
We need to abolish LSUPD, which cannot be trusted to conduct fair and thorough investigations on behalf of victims. We need to abolish the system of obscene profits which drives our toxic, untouchable sports culture. And so much more.
Let’s not put our faith in institutions and misleaders who have never worked for the well-being of students, especially survivors. This is a decades-long issue, and nothing short of a campus-wide changing tide will get things done.
