When I see someone write "It's hard to hold onto the label of Evangelical when I see X", too often that person isn't really an Evangelical at all if you look at their theology. Often they've given up on Biblical authority a long time ago and are simply holding onto the culture.
Imagine if someone said they were a Conservative, but actually these days they really like Marx and think the free market doesn't work. They might use the label "Conservative" but there's nothing conservative about their political philosophy at all.
Words have to mean something - you can't say "I'm X" when all the evidence is that you aren't. But then what we expect from a culture that now says you can be any identity you want, even if you are blatantly not?
