Thanks to @coyleneil for bringing forward the #LiftTheBan campaign on removing work restrictions on people seeking asylum. A disappointing response from @CPhilpOfficial that continues to refer to people seeking asylum as ‘illegals.' #NoHumanIsIllegal (1/5)
The label of ‘illegals’ is both dehumanising and factually incorrect. The term completely undermines the UK’s commitment to the Refugee Convention & values of the UN SDG’s. (2/5)
67% of businesses welcome lifting the ban. 1 in 7 of individuals seeking asylum have experience in health and social care. 40% are waiting longer than 12mo for @homeoffice decisions. People seeking asylum want to help our communities to #buildbackbetter. (3/5)
We were shocked to hear the Tier 2 visa evidenced as as a way for people seeking asylum to work in the UK – a visa that disadvantages the vast majority of migrants – and a response that demonstrates minimal understanding of the lived experiences of people seeking asylum. (4/5)
The ban on work for people seeking asylum has proven to only increase exploitation. Safe migration routes means including ALL migrants. We stand in solidarity to #LiftTheBan (5/5)
