"State surveillance of Muslim citizens has gone over board with a direct surveillance of Muslims' sex lives and romantic relationships. 1/8

Among other things, we have seen how the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Integration, Mattias Tesfaye, in the last few months has directly called on Muslim leaders to loudly and clearly publicly endorse that Muslim women have the right to sex before marriage. 2/8

We have seen how he calls dowry a "bazaar trade between two clans", and how in this connection he seeks to criminalise Muslim marriage contracts, dowry and religious guidance as psychological violence - a sentence up to three years in prison. 3/8

But Mattias Tesfaye's campaign is not about "saving" Muslim women from getting too expensive gifts when they get married. Muslim women do not need Tesfaye or others to save them. 4/8

Tesfaye's campaign,on the other hand,is about the state's social control over the everyday lives of Muslims,especially women,where they want to control who the Muslim woman marries,what gifts she receives,who she seeks guidance from and where she sends her children to nursery.5/8

Structural Islamophobia is precisely about maintaining the power of the state over the lives of Muslims through a suspicion of their everyday lives. The disparity in surveillance in which citizens are exposed to testifies to 6/8
