Good morning. @chicagosmayor announced a 5-year capital plan this morning that includes funding 2021 and 2022 projects like street resurfacing, streetlight replacement, bridge repair and sidewalk repairs with $1.4 billion in borrowing introduced in the budget process.
Lightfoot in a statement says the plan is “our latest ambitious campaign to invest in Chicago’s residents and businesses, and lays the groundwork for our future as a premier global destination and the best city in the world to call home.”
Funding for 2021-22 projects includes $216M for aldermanic menu, $255M for bridge & viaduct repair and replacement, $250.4M for residential & arterial street resurfacing and new Green Alleys, and $112.3M to replace 4,000 aging light poles, 300 blocks of lighting infrastructure.
Funding in 2021-22 also includes $28.4M to modernize the traffic signal system, $112.2M for sidewalk repairs, $49M for improvements on bike lanes, priority bus routes, pavement markings & Vision Zero pedestrian safety projects, and $104.2M for 24 streetscape projects.
Additionally, $12.3M to reconstruct one mile of lakeshore including Morgan Shoal and expanding the Calumet River Dredging Facility, $132.5M for renovations and upgrades to @ChiFamSupport, @ChiPublicHealth and @chipublib facilities and $162.1M for city's fleet, equipment and IT.
According to the news release, most of the projects will require at least half of the people working on them to live in the city. "The City procurement and contracting process will place a high priority on using minority, women-owned and locally owned businesses."
