Lord chancellor, @RobertBuckland, giving evidence to Commons committee on human rights, on government’s plans to ‘update’ human rights act, judicial review and plans to reform the Supreme Court. You can watch it here: https://parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/c225dd21-7986-4665-802d-44cfccf33467
I should say, I'm not going to tweet all of his evidence, but only if he says something new and interesting.
Asked about terms of ref, timescale & process for review of HRA, Buckland says he can't answer, as not agreed yet. He says chair & panel will be independent, & will include diversity of thought from all 4 nations of UK.
He's pressed on independence of chair, when chair of "independent" review of judicial review is chaired by Lord Faulks, a former minister who has criticised the courts on the issue. Buckland says he has "absolute confidence in the independence of Lord Faulks.
Buckland says he can't name the chair of HRA review, but reassures committee the person will be "independent, diverse, robust and free of influence from me or any other ministers".
Buckland: HRA review is op to improve & enhance the way convention rights are applied in UK. He wants to dispel talk that human rights are just for criminal, but for everyone, incl,
someone who's had privacy interfered & victims of crime who've suffered by failure of state.
Buckland says there are "so many examples where human rights protections have done much good" and he wants that to come more to the fore.
Buckland insists his aim is not to diminish rights, but to enhance the mechanism by which they are applied.
Joanna Cherry asks if PM thinks HRA is another of Tony Blair's big mistakes. "You'd better ask him," he replies.
"Black people’s human rights are not equally protected compared to white people’s human rights in this country," committee chair @HarrietHarman tells Buckland.
