People ask why I post some of the nasty tweets I receive, like the ones this week, for reporting on AB. They tell me, “Just ignore.” How does ignoring solve a problem of female reporters being frequent targets of attacks and threats on social platforms? It doesn’t.
...Ignoring online harassment, including the “watch your back” and “shut your mouth” messages we get does nothing to curb this abusive behavior. It does nothing to help younger journalists who currently struggle with this or might encounter it down the road.
...I’ve been in this business long enough to learn that others’ opinions and hurtful comments don’t define me. But 10 years ago? I didn’t have that same head on my shoulders or those support systems in place. People also feel more isolated than ever right now. You aren’t alone.
...I should add that this isn’t exclusive to female reporters, although I do think there is a pattern and it tends to be more prevalent with women. But what @MBakerTBTimes encountered in his coverage of Jameis Winston at FSU was appalling. He handled it like the pro that he is.
