Thread:
Labour has long had a system where it can auto-exclude (automatically expel) members for various offences against the party e.g. campaigning for another party, signing another party's nomination papers.
Auto-exclusion means no time consuming panel meeting, you just get a letter from the General Secretary expelling you. End of process.
The volume of antisemitism cases and the need to expunge antisemitism from the party at speed, not take years doing it, means we need to look at adding auto-exclusion to the rulebook armoury available to Labour to police its ranks against antisemitism.
A panel process - an Independent Panel as recommended by the EHRC - would still be needed to deal with borderline cases and the most complex and contentious ones that required a hearing.
But cases that are clear cut egregious breaches of the IHRA definition could be dealt with by auto-exclusion thereby enabling the party to tackle this issue with the vigour and speed that are so obviously necessary.
