There's a far bigger issue at stake with the Corbyn/Starmer debacle. Beyond the squalid mechanics of Starmer's vendettas, beyond the hateful swamp of bigotry he's created, beyond the savage hate-mongering of the BoD and the toxic centre.

We are told we must believe falsehoods. We must disregard the evidence of our own reason and senses, and we must instead believe professional liars who have constructed a wholly false pseudo-reality.

This is Trump-land. This is ‘Lock him up!’, this is ‘MAGA’, this is the deliberate destruction of respect for truth. This is promoting contempt for reality and the validation in its place of fantasy and conspiracy-theory.

A culture which has taken this path cannot flourish. It’s exactly the same anti-reason behaviour that brings anti-maskers, anti-vaxers, science-deniers.

It’s profoundly dangerous. If truth and reason are to be briskly shoved aside in favour of hate-mongering and falsehoods, we are in peril as a society.

Starmer’s shameful surrender to the ridiculous liars of the BoD and the PLP is just a symptom of a far deeper malaise, one that will in time destroy us, as it is destroying USA now.

We need to fight it, because truth isn’t some dispensable luxury, it’s the air we breathe, and when it is banished, when we are taught to hate it, we will suffocate, and we will die as a decent, truth-seeking society.
