I said a lot more in my email than made it into this article, but want to add: Not publishing Trump is NOT censorship. It’s an editorial decision about what’s worthy of printing. Let him self-publish if he wants. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/18/books/trump-memoir-publishers.html
Some more of my quote which didn’t make it into this piece: “Making my own objections clear might or might not help sway the opinion of higher-ups, but at least it might make it easier for others who are also horrified to express their own feelings too and feel supported.” (1/x)
“I'd hope that, as with the Woody Allen memoir, any publishing company would reconsider such a deal if many of its own employees, including authors, objected.” (2/X)
This is what I said immediately before the quote in the article: “A publisher is not just a printing press. Publishers make judgments all the time about what works are worthy of publishing and what works aren't; ask anyone who's had a manuscript rejected. (3/X)
(Cont.) “They don't always get it right, obviously, but there are some cases where the right call is clear, and this is one of them.” (4/X)
“The purpose of publishing is to present information and viewpoints that are useful, and that means *not* publishing viewpoints that are verifiably false and arguably harmful. If Trump wants to air thoughts that are not tethered to reality, he is always free self-publish.” (5/X)
I should have just taken a photo, but wanted to make it accessible

Not publishing Trump isn’t censorship. It’s exercising editorial responsibility. A publisher ought to be proud of the books they put out. Would you honestly be proud to put this book out?
