Remember when I said this about Michigan ahead of the election? Feels like a necessary time to share this again. Racism has always been a serious issue in this state — especially in cities that border Detroit. https://twitter.com/kat__stafford/status/1314353653973749762
Black residents, Black activists, Black leaders, Black journalists — whose voices I’ll add have rarely been valued in newsrooms to allow them to report deeply and honestly on the hotbed of racism and inequity that has existed here and beyond for far too long.
The point of me resharing my earlier thread is to emphasize there shouldn’t be a single story that doesn’t put a fine point or the context of race in a story about what happened at the Wayne County Board of Canvassers meeting last night.
People equate Wayne County with Detroit because it’s the county’s largest city and is more than 78% Black. But Wayne County as a whole has a significant white population. Black folks will tell you about the racism they often experience in communities bordering Detroit.
