Today is 17 years since Section 28 was repealed in England & Wales (Scotland got there earlier).
I was at Uni when it became law. It pushed me to come out. I couldn’t be silent while LGBT were attacked.
Don’t believe our rights won’t be threatened again.

It may be hard now for some to comprehend quite how hostile society and media were to LGBT.
Here’s a selection of quotes from newspapers taken from just a couple of months before Section 28 was passed.
Sadly, this resonates now with the media treatment we see of trans people.
Me and friends got arrested for daubing Fleet Street with pink triangles (this was before 🏳️‍🌈).
The many protests didn’t stop Section 28 becoming law, but it helped to build a community and a movement, including @stonewalluk and Outrage, which fought for and won rights for LGBTQ.
Equal treatment under the law should not be taken for granted. History tells us that.
Grasp tightly that flame of activism that those who came before us lit; there are challenges ahead.
