Today @ClimateOutreach launches one of most detailed studies ever done on British perceptions of climate change > 10k survey sample & 60 hours of focus groups. Findings show we’re in a new era of climate politics. Time to update our assumptions. (Thread)
Climate is concern across people of all ages, walks of life. Leave/ Remain/ Left/Right/Young/Old/North/ South. Not a culture war; in fact, massive consensus.
Climate denial virtually extinct (3%). Fed up with the division in our society, 74% think protecting the environment could bring us closer together.
Far from being hostile to climate agenda as often characterised by certain Westminster pundits, Red Wall voters are amongst MOST concerned about the issue. 88% concerned to some extent, and the ‘very concerned’ are 10 pts higher than average.
Data makes clear is that policymaking must catch up with public desire for action. Overall around 60% want the party they voted for in 2019 to do more on climate and the environment. Just 7% want them to do less.
Strong belief cutting carbon is an opportunity to create jobs (70%) and growing support for a green recovery, even if costs more in short term. Every segment see opportunities to grow British industry in renewable energy, battery manufacturing & electric cars (82%).
But solutions must be designed to the needs of citizens and framed in a way that fits with their view of the future. If people feel a green policy is unfair, they will likely be against it. Fairness is fundamental to effectiveness.
