Our new @EnrolYourself Hosts are learning that there’s no fear quite like the fear of being asked to explain what a Learning Marathon is.

Joking, not joking.

So, here’s a thread to describe the full 6 month journey. 26 tweets for 26 weeks. http://enrolyourself.com/learning-marathon
1/ Week 1

Here's @TazTheStarGazer to describe Kick Off:

“You meet a group of strangers. For 2 days you learn what Enrol is all about, explore who you are as a person, & map out the next 6 months. Within 48 hours you’ll feel like you’ve known these people for a very long time!”
2/ Week 2

The Explore Phase has begun. It's about research, divergence & making as many connections as you can in 2 months.

Explore is 1/3 phases, based on the @designcouncil double diamond: http://designcouncil.org.uk/news-opinion/what-framework-innovation-design-councils-evolved-double-diamond

@Rebeccaannbirch we're still using the resources you made 💙
3/ Week 3

You'll start meeting your buddy who you'll see once a fortnight. A buddy is someone who:

🕶️ Can 'widen your lens'
🧒 You just wouldn't meet otherwise
✏️ Can keep you accountable

You don't need a Learning Marathon to find a buddy. Some tools: https://bit.ly/330gjUV
4/ Week 4

Each person in the peer group takes their turn to run a fortnightly meetup. Kind of like a workshop relay.

Meetups come in every shape and shade.

The 👑 of meetups (for me) was Lawrence’s 'create our own Tarot deck' workshop, dubbed by @maxfyfe as ‘The Mind Blower’.
5/ Week 5

You’ll start to see who’s going to play which role in the group.

As Host, I played the role of Rock ⛰️
@matt_weatherall was the Maker ✏️
I would say @SarahAdefehinti was the Intensifier!! 🌀

👀👇 12 cards to help co-learners take on helpful roles in the peer group.
6/ Week 6

"It has been overwhelming at times - this sense of being thrilled that we all exist" - @ali_norrish

You'll start to realise your peer group is a human library. Aka a group of indescribably unique humans that you could learn more from than all the 📚 in the 🌎.
7/ Week 7

You're 🍒 deep in the Explore Phase now.

So, depending on your nature, you may have documented every scrap of your research in a beautiful sketchbook, like these from @katie_slee below, or you might be carrying it all around in your brain box.
8/ Week 8

'Power Up' Day marks the end of the Explore Phase.

Everyone presents their 'evidence table' to the group for feedback, critique and builds which are captured on sheets (see @IritPollak presenting the early stages of @WADUP_Podcast).

This can also be done on Zoom.
9/ Week 9

Develop Phase has begun. It's about turning insights into ideas, & starting to make, prototype & test.

This comes naturally to some & is more of a stretch for others. Frameworks can help you get unstuck. The http://diytoolkit.org  from @nesta_uk is v user friendly.
10/ Week 10

By now your learning question may have drastically changed. This usually signals progress.

@iOvrThoughtThis went from:

'How can I earn enough money helping early stage startups with little to no technical resources to go from 0 to something?'

To:

'Who am I?'

👏
11/ Week 11

At some point during the Learning Marathon it might be your birthday. And your peer group might perform a collaborative rendition of Happy Birthday using boomwhackers.

@EnrolYourself can’t guarantee that this will happen, but it might.
12/ Week 12

You have reached the half way point. Expect a dip in energy.

You might feel your learning question is taking you on less of a wild, wild journey - and more of a wild, wild goose chase.

You might feel an existential crisis coming on. But luckily, you're not alone!
13/ Week 13

Your energy picks back up as you start testing a project idea.

See Anton proposing his idea for Make Club in 2018. He prototyped it as a meetup for a while - and it still exists today as part of his @_designcalendar community 'funhouse' http://designcalendar.io  👀
14/ Week 14

You really begin to feel like your learning question is fruiting:

🍇 New ideas
🍍 New connections
🍉 Many possibilities

You can find every participant and their learning question in the fold-out cover of our yearbook: http://enrolyourself.com/huddlecraft
15/ Week 15

The 2nd Power Up day is coming up and you're feeling a bit frustrated with your Host who won't tell you what good looks like.

You asked 'is what I've done good enough?' and they said 'I don't know, what do YOU think?'

Maddening.
16/ Week 16

At the second Power Up day you'll invite in 3 external champions to join your feedback circle. This helps to:

1. Create more accountability at a point in the process when it can dip.
2. Bring in perspectives that can challenge those within the peer group.
17/ Week 17

"Every single person in my peer group came to an Eating with Elephants event at one point or another"

Time to get testing. @with_elephants on prototyping her idea to combat social isolation w supperclubs, and her group showing up for her. http://eatingwithelephants.com
18/ Week 18

Conflict occurs!

Inevitably, this can happen in groups w diverse perspectives. It CAN be a chance to learn:

@AlanaBloom has been developing our conflict resolution protocol, drawing on several sources, inc. this great resource from @Loomio https://loomio.coop/looking_after_people/conflict_resolution
19/ Week 19

At this point you might find peer-to-peer (p2p) is creeping on you:

👶"I've used p2p principles in the raising of my baby"

👫"I've formed buddy relationships w my friends"

🖥️"I get my coding students to teach each other"

🔎"P2p has become the way I look at life"
20/ Week 20

Since the second Power Up day you're in the Showcase Phase: the final 2 months.

You're working toward a public Showcase event, where you'll share your response to your learning question. You might know exactly what you're showcasing - or have no idea yet.
21/ Week 21

Your project might become something you never expected.

Mine was all about habits. I nailed many thousands of nails into a board so I could wind a message with used dental floss.

It's not as gross as it sounds. Read more, p36: https://issuu.com/enrolyourself/docs/lm18_showcase_booklet
22/ Week 22

Your learning question might be turning into something big 🐘

Kim set up @CateringHouria a pan-African catering company training & hiring migrant women, and fighting modern slavery.

In #Bristol for #lockdown ? Order a Friday Feast: https://www.houria.co.uk/friday-feast
23/ Week 23

The Showcase has crept up. You'll be preparing, & wondering how bold you're prepared to go 🤔

Like @Speakerine who decided to go for it & do some stand up comedy. Or @manis_ha who wrote & sent an email, live, to a mental health practitioner who had inspired her.
24/ Week 24

Blast from the past: our 1st Showcase event hosted @EdspaceHoxton

We were v over-achieving & also raised money for @AdvocacyAcademy "because it's a Marathon so we should get sponsors"! Glad we did it but no longer a part of every Marathon 🤣
You can follow @ZahraDavidson.
