The evangelism around self driving cars is just delusional. They are not the answer to congestion or pollution. They are not the answer to energy saving. They. Are. Not. The. Answer. Look at it this way (1)

You're trying to cross a busy city road. What stops you? Are the drivers there better than you? Is their journey more important than yours? Is their presence more worthy? Of course not. You can't cross because its dangerous. Because they'll kill you. (2)

You might think this is hysterical. It isn't. Go on, go and try and cross a busy four lane road in a city. You can't just walk out and do it. Now you're telling me self driving cars are going to reduce the risk of accidents by spotting people and stopping? Ok... (3)

Now fast forward to the future where you can step out in the road and the cars automatically stop. Are you going to walk 50 yards down the road, wait three minutes for the lights to change when you've pressed the beg button at the crossing? No. You're not (4)

In that scenario you're going to step off on to the road and the cars will stop. And so will the 300 other people who want to cross the road every hour. Now think about people trying to claim space cycling (5)

...you can either claim your space in the lane and force other users to obey the rules and act safely, or you can be bullied to the side like you are now. Of course you'll assert your space, its safer (6)

...the self driving vehicle 'revolution' can only work if either (a) these vehicles are programmed to kill, literally to bully vulnerable users of the space using the threat of death, or (b) we fully exclude pedestrians and cyclists from the space (7)

The price for this 'safety' is too high. Its a prison sentence for anyone not driving a car. Self. Driving. Cars. Cannot. Be. The. Answer. For. Cities. (fin)
