As we're halfway through #workinpublishing week I wanted to say (along with many other people) that my DM's are open for anyone who is seeking advice on getting into publishing (especially editorial/ commercial fiction as this is my background).
Publishing can be such a daunting industry to get into, especially as it's so competitive and quite often you never get a response as to why you were unsuccessful. But let's open it up and discuss how best to approach applications, cover letters and CVs.
My top tip is definitely to know what the publisher you're applying to publishers. Know some of the books that have published this year and we want to know what you read in your spare time (and this doesn't have to be literary classics), tell us if it's romance, thrillers etc
Remember your transferrable skills. In editorial, three really important skills are communication, time management and attention to detail so in your cover letter highlight when you've had to use these.
As an example, I worked in hospitality before starting publishing so I highlighted how I used these skills in a different setting. Please don't worry about where you've picked any of these things up from, it's just important to highlight them and how you'd use them in a new role.
I didn't mean for this to become a thread, but it did. Please do ask any questions you might have. Even if this is just for details about what it's like to #workinpublishing and find out whether it is the industry for you.
