We're sharing our experiences at the @SCDC_Org #DigitalPB2 conference today!
First off - @IslaRMcIntosh kicks us off with an intro to @GDA__online
. @GDA__online's approach to digital inclusion is informed by the social model of disability: the inequality we face is not caused by our disability or impairment, but by barriers in society.
We're taking questions from the audience about our approach: 'What do we need to make our PB marketing accessible? How can we ensure we're including diverse members of the community?'
Another participant shares their experience: 'It took loads of work to get people connected. We make so many assumptions. It’s a fallacy to suggest that online participation is cheaper or easier than face-to-face. It is much harder. The digital divide is a real one, we’ve found.'
Someone shares their thoughts on making PB accessible: 'Every time I go to a workshop, I think, there are so many angles to be sorted out. There’s a lot to do here. It’s like a big puzzle: when you think you’ve got one piece, you realise there’s other pieces missing.' #DigitalPB2
More feedback: 'We’re currently trialling completely digital PB. You’ve raised a lot of things for us to think about. I was wondering what organisations we have in our area that we can connect with.' @IslaRMcIntosh offers local suggestions of organisations and access panels.
'There was a perception there would be either or, face-to-face or digital. But now we’re hearing that it can be both. It shows that going digital is not resource-free. It still requires professional staff who know what they’re doing in terms of community engagement.'
