On this date in history 1936, only two weeks after BBC Television began, the first cooking broadcast was shown... Often mistakenly credited to a host of others, the 'first' was a woman called Rosina Dixon, known as The Singing Cook, appearing on the programme London Characters.
The original clip of the wonderful Singing Cook, Rosina Dixon, is sadly not available - but happily a couple of weeks later she recorded this for @BritishPathe which, according to my archive delving, looks to recreate her BBC appearance...
The Radio Times said of Rosina Dixon at the time - "A woman who can cook well in these days of tin-openers and restaurants is all too rare. And a woman who can cook well and sing well, like Rosina Dixon, is a positive treasure." I'm a little bit obsessed with her đź’•
Rosina Dixon, The Singing Cook, released one record, featuring two songs - one she sang on the broadcast - My Dear Soul, and backed with a version of Danny Boy... She toured around the country singing her 'hit' on Variety bills following her appearance on the BBC...
Presumably she also rolled out her pastry on stage too - I'm determined to uncover more about her and her life (if anyone has any clues I'd appreciate them!). Perhaps without The Singing Cook we wouldn't have had The Galloping Gourmet, or The Naked Chef? #TelevisionCookingHistory
