NSW Parliament just passed a law allowing landowners to clear all the bush 25m from their fence, even if that’s miles away from any houses or people. Which is about as useful as handing out free water pistols in the face of mega fires. But will wreck the forest and kill koalas.
No one — not RFS, not NSW Farmers — asked for this. Not in the Bushfire Inquiry report.
Fires are a major problem, and defending against them requires real leadership. Instead, my organisation got accused of a bunch of things by people who’ve never bothered to meet with us.
Whipping up a culture war might help you win votes, fellas. But the people of NSW deserve an awful lot better.
