As far as I can tell after looking into this today, there was no planning behind SECNAV’s announcement, and Singapore—specifically named by the Secretary as a potential base for a future First Fleet—wasn’t consulted at all. This is not a serious proposal. https://twitter.com/DerekJGrossman/status/1328840835929042945
Even if it were serious, it seems it might create more problems than it solves, as @BDHerzinger outlines here. The Pentagon under Trump has often sought to rename and reorganize to create the appearance of action. This seems consistent with that approach. https://twitter.com/BDHerzinger/status/1328919420668809217?s=20
We are likely to see other grasps at a legacy from outgoing Trump administration officials in the next 63 days. Analysts and journalists should be circumspect about these proposals, and put them in context. Quite a few of them are likely to be equally unserious.
