Just as teachers need the right conditions in which to flourish, so too do school leaders. Those that step forward to lead our schools deserve more than the ‘sink or swim’ mentality currently applied to headship #improvingschools
Expertise around school improvement has too often become a commodity to be sold rather than insight to be shared. We need to reconnect schools with one another locally, irrespective of whether they are academies or maintained, and encourage collaboration over competition
The opportunity to apply one’s professional insight and knowledge to support colleagues should be seen as the pinnacle of a school leader’s career. We need to energise these leaders & nurture the sense of aspiration to be part of something bigger – a national education system
Ofsted labels stick not just to schools but to the people that work in them. Good teachers and leaders need to be recognised as such, irrespective of where they choose to work. Govt need to flip the incentives to encourage people to work in the schools that need them most...
We need to ensure that leaders know that someone ‘has their back’ and won’t let them fail; that choosing a tough assignment will not be career suicide if it goes wrong; by not choosing the easy road you’ll be supported to be the very best you can be. #improvingschools @NAHTnews
