‘I worked in a company for 8 years, moving department from department, making those tiny steps in a circle, then I realized they never wanted to promote me, I made a bold decision to move’ Asia told me with a crooked smile. There was horizontal and vertical segregation

Asia like many women experienced horizontal segregation at the work place. She further told me of how men she had trained will be promoted before her own eyes while she was always suggested for softer roles eg communication and moved around. As a result she didn’t move upwards
Having kids also added to that as it was perceived that she won’t give her job her all, however that was more reason to even work harder as now she had more responsibilities. This is what we call a maternal wall bias.
What to do if you are a woman in Asia position ?
First you have to understand your organization, do they have a succession plan? Is there room for you to move upward? This will help you to position yourself.

Have clear career goals and highlight your areas of strength and use them to progress in areas that you want, train on your weaker areas and get new skills.
Let your supervisor/manager/ director know of your short and long term goals so that any movement across departments if necessary should build up to your goals not throw you far from them.
Always seek a career mentor advise to get another perspective
If you have family responsibilities and it’s translated as a lack of commitment then signal your career commitment. Eg. Don’t let people assume everytime you are out of the office you are attending to your family matters, communicate when you are attending meetings etc outside
Know of the policies at the office that supports work- life balance and use them , if there aren’t any start advocating for them. Work on having a work- life integration that allows you to deliver at work whilst attending to your other duties
Finally be that example and a role model to junior women.
Have a great day !
