Favourite topic of mine. It’s a long term game. Clubs must be run like a business with commercial sense, not a vanity project. https://twitter.com/mybahasbola/status/1328887829766709248
(1) Lower operating cost- cut the frills out. Operate smaller stadium that you can fill weekly. Keep cost as lean as possible. Profitable clubs overseas have small venues and not reliant on matchday receipts for revenue.
(2) Revenue driver- Invest in player development. Biggest revenue earner for small clubs are player sales. This has not taken off in Malaysia, a developed transfer market. Merchandising too can be recenue source, but wont be big unless you are large club
(3) Sponsorship - find corporate backers that can keep you running. Key is to know how much is your annual running cost and to find sponsors to cover this. So there is recurring income to pay for salaries & others. Anything you make above this re-invest into club
(4) Partnerships - form alliances with large overseas clubs. Tap on them for player placements, training stints, exchange of knowledge. Point is focus on what you can afford and latch on others for areas you cannot do
(5) People - clubs should be run by professionals who understand commercial & business sense. Institutionalise it.
Reality is, there will always abe divide in resources between large clubs who can afford, and smaller ones who cannot. So need to know your space. Better be small but sustainable. Once all this done, there is profitability track record, can consider listing.
La Liga has economic control guidelines where every club must submit their financial accounts & budgets to the league. An operating license will be issued when the league is convinced you have enough money to pay players and keep club going.
All the best. Will be watching with keen interest how this develops.
