The UCP is talking with the public about their parks cuts for the first time in 8 months via a Zoom town hall. They asked for questions via Zoom's chat feature then disabled the chat less than 10 minutes in. They're also deleting Facebook comments as they come in.
Nixon says it's a myth they're delisting parks, that's simply not accurate.
This is what was posted on the Gov website in March (It's since been taken down): https://web.archive.org/web/20200305154306/https://albertaparks.ca/media/6496183/parks-impacted-list.pdf/
This is legit wild. You can watch for yourself here: https://www.facebook.com/ucpcaucus
This was billed as an online town hall. "Now for my second supplemental," says an MLA. 30 minutes in and this is just MLAs asking Minister Nixon questions....
Oh! Yet another question from an MLA. What a surprise!
I keep hearing again and again about transparency and consultation, says MLA Copping. Adds info was on the site, then off the site. Minister Nixon says they haven't made the changes people had accused them of. Consultation occurred in the election, says Nixon.
Another MLA question! My constituents wonder if this whole parks thing is this just a product of an overall gov agenda with regards to privatization applying equally to healthcare + education, says MLA Milliken.
What do you say to all the people that have lawnsigns? asks MLA Ellis. Where could they go to dispel this misinformation? Minister Nixon plugs UCP caucus website + @Albertaparks sites.
Wow. I worked as a journalist for years. I also worked as a press secretary. I now work in communications. I have never seen anything like this town hall. It's nuts.
Now that I've had an hour to think about that trainwreck, gotta say it's interesting that 6 (!) Calgary MLAs participated. 8 months in, the UCP is recognizing this parks stuff is an issue in Calgary. Drive through any conservative 'hood and count the Defend Our Parks signs.
