Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the voters & activists who loudly stood up to this attempted miscarriage of justice.

Democracy won. For today.

But the attempted disenfranchisement of Detroiters should not be soon forgotten. /1 https://twitter.com/michpoligal/status/1328885033176883201
The GOP members of the Board didn’t just fail to “call balls and strikes.”

What happened today was more like the game’s official scorekeeper attempting to rewrite the scorebook—after the game had concluded. /2
The only reason we have a democracy at all is because we assume certain things are inviolate.

When we feed our ballot into the tabulator, we assume the people responsible for tallying the vote will count it. We assume the vote will be certified.../3
...and that the courts, the army, etc won’t undo the will of the people.

Our democracy is based, fundamentally, on trust that the people’s voice will be respected by the various actors in the system.

Without that trust, the basic premise of our republic falls apart. /4
That basic compact was threatened today.

Two partisan officials—charged with the ministerial duty of certifying the votes—tried to use their ministerial position to override the votes of Michigan’s largest city. /5
If our democracy is to survive, what happened today can’t occur. It just can’t. Our counting and canvassing can’t turn into partisan battlegrounds.

Fortunately, the backlash today was strong and loud and fierce. The people stood up. And the two canvassers backed down. /6
So, thank you again to all those who raised their voices. The social backlash enforced our social compact.

Let’s hope today’s events are a low point—not a canary in the coal mine. /fin
