Since people are doing writing tips coz of that one frankly shite thread here are a few from a bitch who took a degree in this shit only to stubbornly only ever use it to write self indulgent fanfiction
1) write whatever the hell you want to write. Like genuinely unless you are being paid just do as you fucking please it’s your fun imagination exercise
1a) unless it’s outright bigotry. Yeah you have creative freedom and freedom of speech but other people have that too and you’re not free from criticism (key word criticism if you’re getting threats yeet them into the void by blocking and reporting)
2) it is occasionally a good idea to remind people that the things in your free internet stories aren’t necessarily sensible to replicate like when jackass had the warning not to copy them it’s not mandatory
3) real tip tho: if you feel like your writing is getting stale or you’re bored do challenges
Not just prompt lists or half of NaNo but like try something totally new
In uni we had to write something using a postmodern style +
My overly wordy ass chose minimalism for a laugh and ended up with one of the best pieces I’ve written in my life and an A grade.
4) if a scene is giving you hell and you’re excited about the next one write the next one and jot the one you’re stuck on down as a rough set of notes that you can come back to
5) if you’re serious about a piece being your best work resist the “I want immediate validation” goblins in your brain and reread it in 24-48 hours so you can edit it with a fresh perspective
6) this is personal preference probably but if you’re cramming labels on to an established cast like they’re a basket of soup cans for woke points it’s gonna be obvious that’s what you’re doing, one well written minority is better rep than a cast who’s labelled just to exist +
So that you can say “look at all this rep!” without putting the work in to actually represent any of them
6 addendum) if you want to write the above I can literally press the X and not read your fic it’s your damn fic have fun!
7) if you feel like writing but you don’t really have any ideas or you’re blocked try writing a couple of 100 short form pieces using prompts to stretch the writing muscles, you never know when you’ll love one and want to do a long piece with it
8) play with style, play with tenses, experiment, you might find something you love and you’ll never know if you don’t try
I don’t have a 9 I think I’m done for now
