I’ve seen a lot of posts recently about the recent “pause” and cancellations of HS activities. The common response is
“This is bigger than sports”
saying that sports aren’t important when compared to the safety of our communities.

Let me first say, I support guidelines that help keep people safe, especially the those that are most vulnerable in our nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
I also support HS activities, because for some, it’s bigger than sports.

The ones saying “this pandemic is bigger than sports” are right, it is. For the kids who’s only motivation to go to school in the morning is putting on the pads after it, it’s bigger than sports. It’s their education.
For the students who don’t have a loving home life, have never felt loved, and are searching for what community looks like, the coaches and teammates that surround them are bigger than sports. It’s their family.
For the athletes being recruited whose families are just getting by, living paycheck to paycheck and likely won’t be able to afford higher education, it’s bigger than sports. It’s their way out.
For the kids that get bullied day in and day out, the only thing keeping them going is the thought of lacing up their shoes, it’s bigger than sports. It’s their escape.
Suicide is up 200%. For the thousands of kids in our country asking the question “is it worth it anymore?” and the reason they say yes is because of the practice they have that afternoon and the teammates they don’t want to let down, it’s bigger than sports. It’s their life.
I get it, we need to get ahold of this pandemic and keep people safe, but we can find ways to compete while following proper safety protocols.
Because for these kids going through this pandemic, you’re right, it’s bigger than sports.
