For me the worst part about today is not that Jeremy didn’t get what he deserved, or even the blatant political manipulation of the processes, but the signal it sent to the membership and how this will worsen the culture 1/
Jeremy didn’t apologise for claiming that claims antisemitism was exaggerated for political purposes. Or for refusing to accept the full EHRC findings or for this role in the crisis. This sends a clear message to the membership: that this behaviour is ok 2/
It doesn’t matter if Corbyn received a warning or not. That will have no impact on him or what members think. To the crank left he’s been vindicated. He’s in the right. His behaviour is acceptable.
And trust me they will engage in the exact same tropes 3/
We’ve seen the glee from MPs and union and party officials. They claim that Corbyn has been vindicated (he hasn’t FYI warning means there was a rule breech). And they show absolutely no concern about the feelings of Jewish members 4/
How is the party culture meant to change when MPs and YL officials and NEC members and union officials are acting as if Corbyn was martyred? As if he did nothing wrong 5/
In many ways it would’ve been better if the disciplinary procedures hadn’t been initiated against Corbyn given the outcome. That way Corbyn wouldn’t have been martyred and his supporters would’ve been forced to confront the EHRC report 6/
Today’s been awful. The complete disregard for the feelings of Jews from people right at the top of the party. And this disregard feeds back to average members. Toxicity from the top feeds toxicity in the lay membership.
As ever with labour it’s 2 steps forward 3 steps back /end
