Ok so here’s my thread on the 2017 Zimbabwe coup. November 3 years ago I was living in South Africa. At this time in Zimbabwe large anti-corruption protests were being led Pastor Evan called the This Flag protests. I attended a protests in CT with my sister at the Zim embassy
I wasn’t very politically engaged at the time because I was a full time student and working full time as well. Then late at night on the 14th my dad called me and told me to turn on ZBC I recorded what I saw
By far the scariest thing I ever saw in my life the big fear at the time was that Mugabe’s paramilitary force the War Veterans were going to rise up. (There was a coup attempt in 2008 that ended in blood) I quickly drove back to Zimbabwe to check up on my family there
The border was flooded with Zimbabweans leaving South Africa to see their families in Zimbabwe and vice versa. It took me 6 hours to get into Zimbabwe and was so bad the army was directing traffic.
The moment it was announced that the war veterans had surrendered all over the country there were massive parties and demonstrations celebrating. Here’s a video I took in Borrowdale we were marching with the soldiers into Harare
People were singing Zimbabwean Defense Forces songs in support and waving the Zimbabwean flag. A clear sign of the success of the This Flag protest movement.
I went back to my home city later that day and there was partying going on well into the next day this is a video my friend took
