I am grateful, humbled, and filled with renewed optimism for the future of our beloved County as I stand before you as your next Mayor.
I’m grateful for my talented and passionate commission team who served alongside me for the last six years on behalf of the residents of District 8. And to my campaign team and every volunteer and supporter who worked tirelessly for our shared dream, thank you!
I’m humbled by the trust placed in me during this unprecedented health & economic crisis that has taken too many lives and shuttered too many businesses. I am ready to confront this crisis & lead our community as we set our sights together on a brighter, more prosperous future.
As I promised throughout my campaign, I will begin by appointing a Chief Medical Officer today – on day one – who will work alongside me to ensure our pandemic response is driven by data and science, not politics.
As my first act as Mayor today, I am thrilled to announce that Dr. Peter Paige, the Chief Physician Executive and Chief Clinical Officer at @JacksonHealth, will be joining Miami-Dade County as our new Chief Medical Officer.
With Dr. Paige, Miami-Dade County and Jackson will work hand-in-hand. With this appointment, we will have a clear and open line of communication between the county and our healthcare system, sharing information, pooling resources, and mobilizing a unified strategy.
This crisis doesn’t just threaten our health – it has impacted our small business community, which is the engine that powers our economy. We need to provide relief to our small business owners & so many others to get our residents back to work, & get our economy back on its feet.
That’s why I will be convening in short order a joint, collaborative County Response and Recovery Taskforce to create a roadmap to guide us through these challenging times as we confront the public health crisis and our economic recovery.
The Task Force will be announced in the coming days and it will represent a cross-section of our county so we can have one response that is guided by mutual respect and cooperation.
My pledge and my plan for all of Miami-Dade is not simply to bring our economy back from the brink – but to rebuild a more just economy that truly works for everyone. Where all our families have a renewed chance not just to survive, but to thrive.
To our County Commissioners, while we may not always agree on every issue, we all agree on our love for our community and commitment to improve the quality of life of our residents and build a better future for those we serve. I am eager to tackle the work before us together.
To the leaders of our 34 municipalities, big & small, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The burden of this past year has been placed on your shoulders, yet you have risen to the occasion, set the example, & gone to bat to help protect our struggling residents & businesses.
This year also marks 100 years since the passage of the 19th Amendment, which began the process of legally securing the right to vote for women. In 2020, at long last, our country and our community have shattered some of our highest glass ceilings.
I stand before you today on the shoulders of women throughout history who marched, organized, voted, and worked to make this moment possible. And to all the girls and women watching in Miami-Dade, I want you to know that the future is as big and bright as you imagine it to be.
Today is a celebration of what we have done– but it is an even greater celebration of what we will do, together. Today is about making history for our community by making sure the hopes & dreams of all our people are woven into a shared vision for the future.
Let’s get started.
